Premier Giorgia Meloni was a "lead
player" in the mediation with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor
Orban that led to Budapest dropping its veto against an EU
package of 50 billion euros in aid to Ukraine, making an
agreement among the 27 member States possible, the premier's
office said on Thursday.
The sources expressed "great satisfaction" at the agreement
reached at the extraordinary EU summit with a unanimous vote
that that not been expected beforehand.
Meloni had face-to-face talks with Orban twice before the start
of the summit, with a meeting during the night and another early
on Thursday, sources said.
