The conservative Serbian Progress
Party (Sns), led by Prime Minister Milos Vucevic and headed by
President Aleksandar Vucic, reportedly won by a wide margin in
local elections held today in Belgrade and 66 other
municipalities. According to preliminary data released by the
Cesid/Ipsos Demographic Research Institute, the Sns in Belgrade
would have won 53 percent of the vote, followed at a great
distance by two opposition-aligned formations -- 'I am also
Belgrade' and 'Choose Belgrade' -- given 17 percent and 12.6
percent, respectively. The Sns, again according to the first
data released by Cesid/Ipsos, would also triumph in Novi Sad,
Serbia's second largest city, with 52.7 percent, and in Nis with
45.2 percent. A wide success, that of the conservative party and
majority force in the country, confirmed by Sns leader Premier
Vucevic and President Vucic himself.According to Vucevic, the
Sns would win in all municipalities where voting took place in
Serbia today, with the exception of four localities-Tutin, Backa
Topola, Senta, and Kanjiza. For President Vucic, today's Sns
result in Belgrade was higher than in the previous local
government elections on December 17.
Speaking at party headquarters, along with Premier Vucevic
and other party leaders, Vucic said the Sns will have 62 or 63
mandates out of the total of 110 in the Belgrade Municipal
Assembly, up from the 54 it won in December. The Sns, he added,
also achieved wide success in Novi Sad and Nis, Serbia's second
and third largest cities, respectively.
