Ukraine: in France, fears of a global food crisis grow

Agriculture Min.: 'let's produce more' at the EU level

(ANSA) - PARIS, MAR 8 - The invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin's Russia endangers food security worldwide, warned the French Minister of Agriculture, Julien Denormandie, underlining that in the Mediterranean basin, many countries depend on Russian and Ukrainian wheat export. "We must avoid a food crisis in the next 12-18 months," he added, reassuring French consumers.

According to Denormandie, France does not depend much on Russian or Ukrainian wheat imports, but food prices could still rise. "We are working on a method to protect the French as well as our partners," he announced, remarking that a "resilience plan" to support agriculture and food sovereignty would be presented by the Paris government. Denormandie also launched an appeal to "produce more" at the European level because "we have the most fertile land in the world." Even the French trade union president, Christiane Lambert (FNSEA), invoked increased production. "We are waiting for the European Union to authorize us to produce on that 4% of fallow land, which remained 'frozen' for environmental reasons. Of course, this move would compensate for only 15% of what Ukraine produces, but that's something," she told Le Parisien. (ANSA).
