Designer Stefan Sagmeister signs the Barcolana 56 poster presented by Generali. Through intertwining an infographic and an old oil painting depicting a woman, the author, with the support of illycaffè, interprets and narrates the 2024 edition of the regatta scheduled in Trieste on October 13. The image is composed of sails of different colors, creating a connection with the Positive Energy theme chosen by Barcolana and of various sizes to represent the evolution of Barcolana's participation over the last 54 years.
The female figure, on the other hand, recalls the progress over time of women's role in the sailing competition, from mere spectators to significant protagonists. The Positive Energy concept, explains Mitja Gialuz, president of the Società velica di Barcola e Grignano, is "an invitation to bring together thoughts and actions to look to the future with optimism.
Sagmeister's poster is an extraordinary artistic synthesis between past positive energies and future projects." "This year, we entrusted the creation of the poster to one of the most acclaimed contemporary artists," says Cristina Scocchia, CEO of illycaffè. "The result is a work of design: an infographic that tells the story of Barcolana through the development of its number of participants from 1969 to 2023. The artist wanted to create a dialogue between pastel-colored sails and an old oil painting representing a woman from the 19th century dressed in festive attire, in which illycaffè and Barcolana recognized an additional message linked to the evolution of the role of women." "Barcolana encapsulates the concept of positive progress that I find fully in line with my artistic vision," says Sagmeister. "I wanted to combine significant data on the regatta's evolution with an eclectic medium like the old oil painting to create that bridge between past and present that tells a story of development over time, offering an encouraging message for the present era."
