Rosario D'Onofrio, former chief
prosecutor of Italian Referees' Association AIA, was sentenced
in Milan Thursday to five years and eight months in jail as part
of an investigation into an alleged maxi international drug
trafficking ring.
D'Onofrio, 56, a former army medial officer who was found never
to have got a degree in medicine, was known as Rambo in the
drugs circles for which he acted as an international courier.
Preliminary hearing judge (GUP) Lidia Castellucci handed down
about 40 sentences in all, up to 17 years in jail, after a
flurry of arrests in 2022.
For D'Onofrio, who was granted extenuating circumstances because
his statements provided useful elements for the investigation,
the final sentence, due to continuation with a previous
conviction, also for drugs, rose to 7 years and 8 months.
