A baby gazelle from the
critically endangered Mhorr subspecies has been born in Turin's
ZOOM biopark, officials announced Thursday.
ZOOM is home to four adult male and four adult female Mhorr
gazelles, and the newcomer is a welcome addition.
A subspecies of the dama gazelle, the reddish Mhorr gazelle
with its think legs, long slender neck and long, S-shaped horns
has been driven almost to extinction by intensive hunting and
habitat loss due to overgrazing, desertification, and armed
conflicts in the central African countries that were once its
home.
Reproduction in parks and nature reserves is the key to
preserving this lovely animal from extinction.
An estimated 15 specimens live in Senegal's Guembeul
Natural Reserve.
