The European Court of Human Rights on Thursday condemned Italy for not protecting a woman and her two children from domestic violence that ended with her one-year-old son being stabbed to death by his father.
In the attack at Scarperia near Florence in September 2018, the man also gravely wounded his partner and tried to kill the other child, a girl.
The ECHR said that "prosecutors remained passive regarding the serious risks the woman was facing and with their inaction allowed the companion to continue to threaten and attack her".
It sentenced Italy to pay the woman 32,000 euros for moral damage.
The mother, Annalisa Landi, filed suit with the ECHR saying the Italian State had violated her and her children's right to life and that the violence against her was partly due to a discriminatory attitude towards her by authorities.
The woman had already been attacked three times by her partner and had filed complaints with police, in November 2015, September 2017 and February 2018.
Despite the opening of a probe into domestic violence and a recommendation that the man should undergo therapy for mental problems, no steps were taken to protect the woman and her children.
