Matteo Salvini's League is aiming to
match its showing at the 2018 general election by capturing 17%
of the vote on September 25, League Lower House whip Riccardo
Molinari told an ANSA Forum on Monday.
The centre-right coalition that the League belongs to is
expected to win Sunday's election, spearheaded by Giorgio
Meloni's right-wig Brothers of Italy (FdI), which was polling at
around 24% before a pre-vote survey blackout kicked in.
FdI is the only major party that did not back outgoing Premier
Mario Draghi's national unity government.
"In a general election the best result in out history is 17%,"
Molinari said.
"That is our benchmark, our reference point, one that is on the
high side.
"FdI clearly benefits from its position in the opposition.
"Those who have been in government, addressing emergencies such
as the COVID and energy-bills ones, are always going to pay an
electoral price".
