Ecological Transition Minister
Roberto Cingolani said Tuesday that Italy should have enough gas
to get through the winter despite uncertainty about supplies
from Russia amid the war in Ukraine.
"We have made the country secure. We should have a tranquil
winter," Cingolani told an RCS Academy webinar on the Repower EU
Plan.
"Our stocks are full. We'll have problems with the prices, but,
if the G20 summit concludes with something positive on the price
cap (for gas), we will have resolved the situation.
"Unfortunately, we won't remove the hardship families and
businesses are facing.
"We proposed a price cap months ago. The European Commission was
slow, then it sped up.
"Let's also hope that the war ends".
Outgoing Premier Mario Draghi's government has moved on many
fronts to try to reduce Italy's reliance on Russian gas since
the invasion of Ukraine.
The administration has signed agreements with several countries
to boost alternative sources of energy and Algeria has replaced
Russia as Italy's biggest supplier of gas.
Cingolani said plans to dock a regasification ship off Piombino
in Tuscany, which has meet local resistance, was crucial to
"national security" as it will make it possible to boost imports
of liquefied natural gas instead of gas coming through pipelines
from Russia.
