Police on Tuesday evicted the last
remaining hippies from their homes in Moon Valley near the town
of Santa Teresa di Gallura in northern Sardinia.
Roughly 30 people were made to leave and each fined 300 euros
for illegal camping.
The eviction took place peacefully and local council employees
then moved in to clear up.
The area has been a popular haunt for hippies and naturists
since the late 1960s, in spite of a ban on staying there.
The hippy residents gave the name to the valley, which over the
decades has also become an attraction for visitors to the
popular holiday island.
However, there have also been cases of rocks covered in graffiti
and drawings or used to form makeshift shelters, as well as
reports of heavy drug use.
