A 4.0-magnitude earthquake late on
Monday at the Campi Flegrei (Phlegraean Fields) has heightened
concern among people living in the volcanic area near Naples
about a recent wave of seismic activity.
The new quake comes after the area was hit by 4.2-magnitude
earthquake last week, the biggest in the zone for 40 years.
Monday's quake also rocked Naples and many people slept outside
overnight out of fears of buildings collapsing.
The authorities carried out checks on both private and public
buildings throughout the night and there were no reports at the
time of writing of major damage.
"Don't let fear get the better of you," said Josi Gerardo Della
Ragione, the mayor of the town of Bacoli.
Civil Protection and Sea Policy Minister Nello Musumeci said
last week that an evacuation plan was being drafted for the
Campi Flegrei in the event that one should be needed.
"We have to get down to work at once," said Musumeci, stressing
that around half a million people live in the area.
The Phlegraean Fields is a collapsed caldera, a volcanic area
formed by several volcanic edifices
