One of several Italian farmers groups protesting Italian and EU policies, rising fuel costs, price cuts and general hardship will drive their tractors around Rome on Friday, one of their leaders announced Tuesday.
Among the issues raised by the farmers are EU policies to mitigate the effects of climate change, and the EU said earlier Tuesday it would pull a Green-friendly halving of pesticide use in a bid to help mollify the protesters who have been parading across Europe.
Andrea Papa, one of the leaders of the Agricultural Redemption Movement, which since Monday has had a rallying point on Via Nomentana in Rome, said they would ask the city prefect to be allowed to hold a procession with tractors in Rome Friday, ahead of the more general parade that will take place some time next week.
"In the afternoon we have a meeting in the prefecture in Rome to find an agreement on the demonstration," said Papa.
"If it is not found we will still demonstrate in the most appropriate manner according to Riscatto Agricolo.
"We will ask (for permission) to hold a procession with tractors on Friday".
