Genoa prosecutors said Tuesday that
they have requested an 'immediate trial', without any
preliminary hearings, for former Liguria Governor Giovanni Toti
in relation to a corruption probe.
The prosecutors made the same request for logistics businessman
Aldo Spinelli - the former chairman of Genoa and Livorno soccer
clubs - and former Genoa Port Authority President Paolo
Signorini.
The case regards alleged bribes in which cash for an election
campaign was exchanged for favours, including the extension of a
port terminal concession.
Toti, who has been under house arrest since May 7, has said he
is innocent and will be able to show his management of the
northwestern Italian region was clean.
The centre-right politician resigned as Liguria governor on
Friday.
A preliminary investigations judge will now verify whether the
conditions for an immediate trial have been met and, if so, set
a trial date.
Liguria is set for early regional elections because of the case
and Interim Governor Alessandro Piana said Tuesday that the
region has proposed October 27-28 as the date to central
government.
