Giuseppe Pignatone, the former deputy prosecutor of Palermo who subsequently served as top prosecutor of Reggio Calabria and Rome, has been placed under investigation by State attorneys in the Sicilian city of Caltanissetta in connection with a case regarding the alleged cover-up of a probe on the Mafia and local tenders dating back to 1992.
The magistrate, currently the president of the Vatican City's tribunal, was questioned by prosecutors in the Sicilian city on Wednesday.
A former prosecutor in Palermo, Gioacchino Natoli, and finance police General Stefano Screpanti are also under investigation for allegedly aiding and abetting the Mafia.
According to magistrates in Caltanissetta, Natoli allegedly helped Mafia-linked entrepreneurs by requesting that an investigation into tenders allegedly controlled by the crime syndicate be shelved and by asking for the destruction of wiretaps that were relevant to the investigation.
The 1992 probe concerned the alleged relationship between members of Palermo's Mafia Antonino Buscemi and Francesco Bonura and the group led by late entrepreneur Raul Gardini - a case on which slain prosecutor Paolo Borsellino had also focused his attention.
