Former Milanese underworld boss
Renato Vallanzasca, 74, who has been detained for over 50 years,
will be moved from Milan's Bollate prison to a nursing home
where he will be held under home detention due to his poor
health, the surveillance court of Milan has ruled.
One of Italy's most notorious gangsters, Vallanzasca will be
moved to the nursing home due to a grave form of cognitive
decline, judicial sources said on Friday.
The surveillance court ruled in favour of the request filed by
Vallanzasca's lawyers, with the favourable opinion of the State
attorney's office.
Vallanzasca, who has been diagnosed with dementia and will be
transferred to a facility in Padua, was the protagonist of the
Milanese criminal world in the 1970s and 80s and has been
sentenced, among others, to four life terms on a number of
charges including murder.
Vallanzasca was first sent to jail in 1972 but he escaped
several times and spent long spells out as a fugitive.
Once romanticised for his prison breaks and life on the run and
nicknamed 'Il Bel Rene' (Handsome Rene'), he became a rebel
figure for some in the politically turbulent 1970s and
orchestrated many prison riots during his time inside.
