Italian President Sergio Mattarella
on Monday said the welfare system is a pillar of Italy's social
model as well as an essential trait of citizenship, in a message
for the Forum "Welfare, Italia" 2024.
"The welfare system, the product of the Constitution's
principles and of the choices made over the republic's decades,
constitutes a pillar of our social model, as well as an
essential trait of citizenship itself.
"However, the services, rules, balances reached are not
guaranteed in an abstract manner, but need constant adjustment
and strengthening related to changes in demands coming from
society, with the aim of ensuring the fundamental universal
nature of rights", said the president.
"We are experiencing deep transformations that have an impact on
the structures and on the sustainability itself of the welfare
system.
"We cannot allow a return of territorial, generational and
social gaps, both in healthcare as well as in other dynamics of
social integration", noted Mattarella.
The president then called for "innovation and projects" to
continue to implement the principles of the Constitution
"placing the person at the centre and ensuring adequate social
protection" and equal rights.
