Over half a million people have
already passed through the Holy Door of St Peter's Basilica
since Pope Francis opened it on Christmas Eve to kick off the
Catholic Church's Jubilee 2025, the Vatican said on Tuesday.
It said 545,532 pilgrims from all over the world have walked
though the door since December 24.
"This is a very significant start (to the Jubilee)," commented
Monsignor Rino Fisichella, the Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for
Evangelisation, which is in charge of organising of the Holy
Year.
By walking through a holy door over the next 12 months,
Catholics will be able to obtain a 'plenary indulgence' for
their sins.
Holy doors have also been opened at Rome's three other major
basilicas, Saint John Lateran, Saint Mary Major and Saint Paul's
Outside the Walls, and at the city's Rebibbia prison.
The Jubilee, which features a rich programme of shows,
conferences, concerts and religious events, is expected to bring
over 30 million pilgrims to Rome.
