The report on organ donations and
transplants in Italy presented Monday by the health ministry
said 2024 was a record year for transplants.
Organ donations were 2,110, up 2.7% compared to 2023, while
transplants were 4,692, an additional 226 with respect to the
previous year - the highest figures ever recorded said the
survey.
About half of transplants (2,393) were of a kidney (+6.6%
compared to 2023), followed by the heart 418 (+13%).
Liver transplants were also on the rise last year, 1,732
(+1.8%), while lung transplants recorded a decrease (from 188 to
174); and pancreas transplants remained stable (36).
The regions with the highest number of donations were Tuscany
(49.4 donors every million residents), Emilia-Romagna (45.5) and
Veneto (44.7).
