A penitentiary police officer who was
in a coma on Thursday after trying to stop an injured prison
inmate from escaping from a hospital in Milan has undergone
further surgery, said a bulletin from San Carlo hospital on
Friday.
Carmine Di Rosa, who was seriously injured after falling 10 m
from a second-floor window while trying to catch 32-year-old
Palestinian prisoner Mordjane Nazim, "underwent surgery for the
stabilization of a fracture of the spine", the hospital
reported.
"The monitoring of the evolution of the injuries and the
clinical-instrumental assessment continues," added the hospital.
Di Rosa's condition remained critical.
On Thursday the hospital said Di Rosa, 28, had undergone
neurosurgical surgery to evacuate a cerebral haematoma and
"cranial decompression and insertion of an intracranial pressure
monitoring system" as a result of the fall.
The incident took place at the San Paolo hospital in the
Lombardy capital, where Nazim had been admitted the previous
night after being hurt in a fight with fellow inmates at Milan's
San Vittore Prison.
The prisoner locked himself inside a bathroom before climbing
out of the window and the two officers guarding him broke down
the door before one of them, Di Rosa, climbed out in pursuit but
then slipped and fell.
Prison union SPP has said inmate escape attempts from hospitals
are on the rise across Italy.
