Four Italian navy officers and one
Libyan one were arrested Friday over a case of alleged cigarette
smuggling using an Italian Navy ship.
They were detained on charges of smuggling cigarettes, arbitrary
boarding of smuggled goods on the military vessel Capri, bribery
for acts contrary to official duties and ideological forgery.
The Italian military personnel under investigation are three
officers and one petty officer of the Italian Navy, while the
Libyan officer is serving in the Libyan Coast Guard.
The five were notified by the Brindisi Judiciary of an order of
"personal and real precautionary measures" at the end of an
investigation by the Guardia di Finanza finance guard tax police
force.
The four Italians were placed under house arrest while the
Libyan was taken to prison.
