An ancient Greek statue of Athena has
come to a Palermo museum for four years in exchange for a
portion of a Parthenon frieze that has returned to Athens in
which Italian and Greek cultural officials hope may be a
precursor to the Parthenon Marbles being returned from the
British Museum.
The archeological museum in the Sicilian capital reached an
agreement for the exchange with the Acropolis Museum in the
Greek capital.
Since Wednesday, the statue dating back to the middle of the
fifth century BC will be on display in Palermo's Antonio Salinas
Museum.
Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni took advantage of the
occasion to repeat that the reunification of the Parthenon
sculptures is a moral obligation for the whole of Europe.
