An allegedly fake Rubens was seized
in the gallery of the Doge'sl Palace in Genoa Friday after a
probe found that the picture of The Risen Christ Appearing To
His Mother, a generic Flemish school work, had been smuggled out
of Italy and falsely authenticated as a Rubens in Prague.
Four people have been placed under investigation for illicit
exportation of art works, police said.
The work was deliberately taken out of Italy so it could be
authenticated as a Rubens in the Czech Republic, police said.
Sir Peter Paul Rubens (28 June 1577 - 30 May 1640) was a Flemish
artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern
Netherlands (modern-day Belgium).
He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish
Baroque tradition.
