In the presence of a large audience of academics, scholars, translators, publishers and students, the eagerly awaited literary meeting with the world-famous writer Dacia Maraini took place yesterday evening at the Europe House in Skopje. The event was organised in cooperation with the Department of Italianistics of the University of Skopje "Ss Cyril and Methodius", as part of the 24th Week of the Italian Language in the World and in line with the central theme of this edition: "Italian and the book: the world between the lines".
The writer's speech was preceded by an address of greeting from the Head of the Department of Italian Studies, Prof. Anastasija Gjurcinova, and the Italian Ambassador to North Macedonia, Andrea Silvestri. In his speech, Silvestri emphasised the great impact of Italian books and publishing in the world, which is constantly growing and ranks fourth in the European publishing market and sixth in world markets.
The guest of honour dialogued with Professor Dagmar Reichardt on the crucial role of translations for the reception of literary works abroad and, in this sense, on the importance of the figure of the translator who "does not limit himself to a mere transposition from one language to another but leaves a personal mark by rewriting the text, also reinterpreting the metaphors, linguistic structures, music and the magic of words".
Connecting with one of the key themes of the Italianistics Conference organised on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of Italian studies at UKIM, the writer also spoke about violence against women, attributing this phenomenon to a rejection of women's independence.
The event concluded with the presentation of Macedonian translations from Maraini's book 'Trio', the result of the translation workshop under the guidance of Prof. Valentina Miloshevic.
