On 4 November, National Unity Day and Armed Forces Day, the customary ceremony to commemorate the fallen soldiers resting at the Italian military cemetery in Asmara took place.
The Italian Ambassador to Eritrea, Marco Mancini - in the presence of a representation of his compatriots, residents and visitors - laid a wreath at the monumental altar dedicated to the Italian fallen as well as at the monument dedicated to the Eritrean fallen, to the sound of the national anthems of the two countries.
There are 772 Italian military personnel who died between 1890 and 1950 buried at the Asmara Cemetery, while a total of almost 5,000 remains of our fallen soldiers are preserved in the cemeteries and shrines throughout Eritrea: Asmara, Massawa, Dogali, Cheren and Adi Quala, whose maintenance and safekeeping are the responsibility of the Italian Embassy in Asmara under the aegis of our Ministry of Defence. Among the guests at the ceremony was a representative of the National Association of African veterans and returnees.
