(ANSAmed) - BEIRUT, MAY 10 - The Russian navy is working
to expand the Syrian naval base of Tartus, in the eastern
Mediterranean, as part of Moscow's efforts to strengthen its
presence in the region, media in Damascus reported on Monday.
The media reports said that the Russian defense ministry is
working to build a floating pier near the existing military base
of Tartus, not far from the headquarters of Russian troops
present in Syria since 2015.
According to information coming from Damascus and Moscow, the
floating pier of Tartus will be ready in the coming months,
probably by spring 2022.
The website al Monitor, which publishes news and analyses
from Syria and the Middle East, reported that Russian news
agency Tass over the last few days said that the Russian army
was working to expand the technical capacity of the naval base
in the port of Tartus to facilitate the reparation of ships and
submarines. Reparations are currently carried out on floating
workshops taken from the Black and Baltic seas. (ANSAmed)
