(ANSAmed) - MADRID, APRIL 26 - Spain is commemorating the
bombing of Guernica, one of the most dramatic episodes of the
civil war in the 1930s, exactly 85 years after the tragedy. As
recalled in a video posted on social media by Premier Pedro
Sánchez, on April 26, 1937, military aircraft sent by Nazi
Germany and Fascist Italy, which backed the front of General
Francisco Franco against the ruling republican government,
bombed the Basque site, killing dozens of civilians.
"Eighty-five years later, we remember this day and all its
victims. Because memory is essential to continue to constitute a
democratic and peaceful society", wrote Sánchez.
At the beginning of April, the historic episode - represented
in a famous painting by Pablo Picasso - was remembered also by
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a speech in video
conference to the Spanish Parliament. "We are in April 2022, but
it looks like April 1937", he said, referring to the reported
massacres of civilians which the Russians are accused of
perpetrating in Ukraine.(ANSAmed).
