According to the Slovenian
newspaper Dnevnik, people smugglers, whose numbers are steadily
increasing, missed the message that the former government
intended to send when longer prison sentences were passed in
2020, the4 Slovenian news agency Sta reports today. Instead,
legislative changes have resulted in acutely overcrowded
prisons. The prosecution of smugglers has placed additional
strain on criminal courts, with these cases taking precedence
over others. In 2020, the now-opposition Democrats (SDS) and New
Slovenia (NSi) claimed that longer prison sentences would send a
message to smugglers, according to Dnevnik.
