Antonio Tajani said Tuesday he had learned only Monday of the
fact that Iliaria Salis appeared in chains before a Budapest
court where she is on trial for allegedly attacking two
Hungarian neoNazis a year ago.
"I did not know about the accompaniment with hand and ankle
cuffs that we saw yesterday, and I was never informed about it,"
said Tajani.
"I honestly did not know how the detainee was being transported.
We have asked and protested that this should not happen again,"
he added.
"Let's see next time what they do," said Tajani.
"Consular visits have always been made, the detainee has
received all the things she asked for, we had no reports of
unusual detention treatment," he added.
Tajani also said Hungarian Premier Viktor Orban, a close ally of
Premier Giorgia Meloni, "has nothing to do with it".
"it is not as though the government decides the trial. The
judiciary is independent," he added.
"The problem is to establish whether the rules were respected
before or after, we cannot intervene," said Tajani.
"Hungary is a sovereign state, and we can only protest" about
how detainees are treated, he concluded.
