The number of young people living in
Italy has fallen by over three million in 20 years, Istat
reported on Wednesday.
The national statistics agency said Italy had just 10.33 million
people aged between 18 and 34 in 2023, a drop of 22.9% compared
to the 13.39 million it had 2002.
The young population is down by almost five million (-32.3%)
with respect to the peak it reached in 1994, Istat said in its
annual report.
There has been an increase over the last 30 years, on the other
hand, in the number of people aged 65 or older, which has risen
from just over nine million in 1994 to over 14 million in 2023
(+54.4%).
