Premier Giorgia Meloni's rightwing
Brothers of Italy (FdI) party has urged the European Commission
to stop the Erasmus Programme's DragTivism Jr project "to avert
European public funds being used to fund projects that risk
exposing young people to gender ideology and LGBTQI+ activism,"
FdI MEPs said Tuesday.
Rightwingers across Europe have slammed the project as allegedly
involving minors participating in events with sexually explicit
content.
The FdI move was announced by MEP Paolo Inselvini, MEP and
co-chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party,
Nicola Procaccini, and by FdI delegation chief Carlo Fidanza.
Inselvini said the project was open to "minors from the ages of
14 to 17".
The move was criticised by +Europa (More Europe) leader
Riccardo Magi, who said it showed Meloni's party was "obsessed"
with gender issues.
"It's a full-blown obsession with FdI, which is now screaming
like a broken record about gender theory and woke ideology,"
said Magi.
