Militants killed at least 48
people in attacks on hotels and a police station in the Kenyan
coastal town of Mpeketoni, the deadliest assault since at least
67 people were killed during a siege at Nairobi's Westgate
shopping centre last September .
Mpeketoni is on the mainland near Lamu island, a well-known
tourist resort.
Kenya has suffered several militant attacks since its
forces entered neighbouring Somalia in 2011 to combat the
al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab group.
