Italians have topped a new poll of
European nations in terms of their hostility to increasing
defence spending to 2% of GDP as requested by the USA and NATO.
Fully 63% of Italians are against raising defence spending, said
the survey of 15 EU nations carried out by the European Council
on Foreign Relations (ECFR) ahead of next week's NATO summit.
Also, Italians are behind just Bulgaria and Greece in terms of
the percentage of the population which is against sending fresh
arms to Ukraine, on 53%; while 57% of those polled think Europe
should push Kyiv into accepting a accord with Moscow, again
behind just Greece and Bulgaria.
Some 80% of Italian are against sending boots on the ground to
Ukraine, the survey indicated.
