Cecilia Sala is in good health and
alone in a cell in Tehran's Evin Prison after being arrested at
Tehran Airport on unknown charges on December 19, Foreign
Minister Antono Tajani said Saturday, calling for the utmost
media discretion over the Italian journalist's case.
"The government, since the day Cecilia Sala was arrested, has
been working to try to bring her back to Italy," Tajani, who is
also deputy premier, told the Senate.
"We are working in collaboration with the Prime Minister's
Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, our embassy in Tehran
and the consulate.
"Cecilia Sala has already spoken twice with her parents.
"Yesterday she received a consular visit from our ambassador to
Iran for about half an hour.
"She is in good health, she is in a cell alone, unlike young
Alessia Piperno who was in a cell with other people who did not
speak any language other than their own. (Writer and blogger
Piperno spent 45 days in Evin in 2022, ed.)
"Now she will receive basic necessities through the Iranian
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, upon delivery by our embassy".
Tajani added: "We are working in perfect harmony with the family
and together with the family the government asks for discretion
and confidentiality for a negotiation that must be diplomatic
and must be done in the best way to guarantee the safety and
return to Italy of Cecilia Sala".
