Italy is not the place to bring all
migrants to, Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani
said Tuesday.
He was speaking about a German NGO, SOS Humanity, that is being
funded by Berlin and which rescues migrants at sea and takes
them to Italy.
"The problem with Germany is related to funding NGOs that then
have to bring migrants to Italy. Why don't they fund NGOs that
bring migrants to Germany? Italy cannot be chosen by the rest of
Europe as the place to take all migrants," Tajani told Tg4.
Germany is also funding an Italian NGO, the Sant'Egidio
Community, that helps migrants on land in Italy.
Premier Giorgia Meloni has voiced "astonishment" that Germany is
funding the NGOs, while Deputy Premier and Transport Minister
Matteo Salvini has called it a "disgrace and a hostile act"
while the deputy leader of the latter's rightwing anti-migrant
League party has said Germany is using migrants as it once used
its (Nazi) armies to destabilise neighbouring States.
