Italy's schools held a minute's
silence on Tuesday as a mark of respect for Giulia Cecchettin, a
22-year-old woman murdered this month, allegedly by her
ex-boyfriend, and all women who are victims of abuse and
violence.
Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara invited schools to hold
the minute's silence at 11:00 in a circular letter.
Cecchettin's ex-boyfriend and biomedical engineering course
mate, Filippo Turetta, was arrested in Germany at the weekend.
He is set to be extradited to Italy.
Turetta is currently being probed for voluntary homicide but
this may change to premeditated murder on the basis of tests and
his testimony, Venice's Chief Prosecutor Bruno Cherchi said
Monday.
The case has shocked the nation, in part because of the age of
the victim and the alleged killer.
On Wednesday the government is set to present a plan to give
young people relationship education in schools as part of
efforts to prevent gender-based violence and stop an alarming
spate of femicides.
